Coarse differentiation of quasi-isometries I: spaces not quasi-isometric to Cayley graphs

چکیده
In this paper, we prove that certain spaces are not quasi-isometric to Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups. In particular, we answer a question of Woess and prove a conjecture of Diestel and Leader by showing that certain homogeneous graphs are not quasi-isometric to a Cayley graph of a finitely generated group. This paper is the first in a sequence of papers proving results announced in [EFW1]. In particular, this paper contains many steps in the proofs of quasiisometric rigidity of lattices in Sol and of the quasi-isometry classification of lamplighter groups. The proofs of those results are completed in [EFW2]. The method used here is based on the idea of coarse differentiation introduced in [EFW1].

Quasi-isometries and Rigidity of Solvable Groups
In this note, we announce the first results on quasi-isometric rigidity of non-nilpotent polycyclic groups. In particular, we prove that any group quasiisometric to the three dimenionsional solvable Lie group Sol is virtually a lattice in Sol. We prove analogous results for groups quasi-isometric to R⋉Rn where the semidirect product is defined by a diagonalizable matrix of determinant one with ...
متن کاملQuasi-isometries between graphs and trees
Criteria for quasi-isometry between trees and general graphs as well as for quasi-isometries between metrically almost transitive graphs and trees are found. Thereby we use different concepts of thickness for graphs, ends and end spaces. A metrically almost transitive graph is quasi-isometric to a tree if and only if it has only thin metric ends (in the sense of Definition 3.6). If a graph is q...
متن کاملQuasi-isometric rigidity of solvable groups
In this article we survey recent progress on quasi-isometric rigidity of polycyclic groups. These results are contributions to Gromov’s program for classifying finitely generated groups up to quasi-isometry [Gr2]. The results discussed here rely on a new technique for studying quasi-isometries of finitely generated groups, which we refer to as coarse differentiation. We include a discussion of ...
متن کاملLectures on Geometric Group Theory
Preface The main goal of this book is to describe several tools of the quasi-isometric rigidity and to illustrate them by presenting (essentially self-contained) proofs of several fundamental theorems in this area: Gromov's theorem on groups of polynomial growth, Mostow Rigidity Theorem and Schwartz's quasi-isometric rigidity theorem for nonuniform lattices in the real-hyperbolic spaces. We con...
متن کاملGroups Acting on Semimetric Spaces and Quasi-isometries of Monoids
We study groups acting by length-preserving transformations on spaces equipped with asymmetric, partially-defined distance functions. We introduce a natural notion of quasi-isometry for such spaces and exhibit an extension of the Švarc-Milnor Lemma to this setting. Among the most natural examples of these spaces are finitely generated monoids and semigroups and their Cayley and Schützenberger g...
